Read this excerpt from my NEW book!
As you know, my friend and co-author, Mark Thompson, and I just released our new book Now, Build a Great Business!
I have posted a short excerpt from our book below. Please leave a comment and let me know your feedback.
Here is the excerpt:
Be Honest with Yourself
When leaders are honest with themselves, they readily admit that they have both strengths and weaknesses. Leaders organize their work to maximize contribution, you should focus on getting better and better at the few things in which you excel, and delegate the rest to others who can do those things better and easier than you can.
Perhaps the most admirable outward quality of a leader is “authenticity.” You express this quality when you honestly admit that you are not perfect, that you make mistakes, and that you still have a lot to learn. Only a person with high self-esteem can allow himself to be vulnerable. This quality, however, makes people want to work with you and help you.
This is not the same as whining or weeping about your insecurities or someone else’s. It’s simply being honest with others, admitting mistakes, and remaining open to input and ideas from others.
How You Treat Others
When Sir Richard Branson of Virgin Brands experimented with a television series based on The Apprentice, he disguised himself as a limo driver and watched keenly how he was treated by the entrepreneur he was testing. “You learn a lot about a person by the way they behave with those who can’t help them,” Branson observed. Those who treated “the help” poorly were “fired” from the show. As Thomas Carlyle wrote, “You can tell a big man by the way he treats little men.”
To be an effective leader, you should be the same with everyone, the weak and the powerful alike. The true leader is as genuine and friendly with a pilot as with a flight attendant.
I hope you found the above excerpt from my book valuable and enjoyable.
